Music Never Dies
I took the time to pick an
assemblage that really reflected the success of songs throughout the course of
an entire year. For that reason, I chose a mashup produced by Daniel Kim in
2015 called Pop Danthology. Daniel Kim took the top hits that were most popular
in that year and created a remix that encompassed them all together. To
accompany the audio, he included the music video in the same order as in the
audio to in order to create a visual aspect for the audience. To transform this
already amazing assemblage, I decided to create a more visual medium by
presenting all the song’s album covers. I presented them in a checkered format
so you could visually see each song that was included in the mashup. The arrangement
was largely based on the color palette on each cover so that too many similar
colors were not contained in the same area.
This project truly encompassed what
it means to compose, because I had to carefully decided on how I wanted to
shift the focus of the original assemblage, but present it in a new format. Writing
in general just presents one’s ideas in a condensed manner while composing is
more focused on making careful decisions that affects a texts rhetorical situation.
These assemblages truly showcase the different manners we can communicate
information. Both texts convey the same top hits, however, one is visual while
the other is auditory so it appeals differently to the same audience. Everyone
understands information in different ways so each text can convey to the
audience’s preference of mediums.
To create
this composition, I had to keep in mind many of the class’ key terms. Assemblage
of course, but also design, genre, network, and exigence all came together to
help me determine how to transform the original assemblage. I had to take each
of these terms into consideration so I could create something with a clear
rhetoric. It is important to see that reuse and design can create new texts
that still convey different, yet similar meanings. Design has a huge impact in
how an audience receives information and this project was very reflective of
that.
