Today the tragic news came in that
the smash Spanish hit, “Despacito” has been bumped down on the billboard charts
due to Taylor Swift’s newest release of her song, “Look What you Made me Do.” “Despacito”
has ruled at the top of the charts for 16 weeks, making it close to breaking
Mariah Carey’s record. The news channel of “mitĂș” was quick to highlight this
news as its mainly Hispanic audience has been carefully watching to see how
much longer the smash hit would continue succeeding. This network is one of my
absolute favorites as it really allows me to identify with my Hispanic
heritage. Their channel is entirely focused on targeting the Hispanic community
and bringing them all together through common interests and experiences. It
provides for a network of people and content that caters to a part of who we
are as people. “Despacito” ruling on Billboard’s Hot 100 Charts has caused such
phenomena as no other Latin song in history since the Macarena has ever
compared to its success. The very fact it ruled for 16 weeks straight, still
has many of us in the Hispanic community in utmost disbelief.
In the event of another song
thwarting its record breaking success, the event was turned into a rhetorical
situation that had to be addressed. The news could not go unnoticed. This
situation has matured as far as it could until now, when now the record
breaking success will decay into history as the pop queen, Taylor Swift,
threatens to quench any possible other songs from reaching the top of the
charts. She created the exigence that called for the audience to take notice in
such a drastic change. In a world with so many different genres of music and
competitors, it was only a matter of time before “Despacito” reached it
crippling constraint.
This
information was present very much in the look and design of a social media
platform, and without a doubt it uses this to their advantage. But that alone
does not define this article’s genre as a whole. The information they’ve decide
to talk about, allows the news outlet to overlap into the different genres of
music and cultural aspects, creating a super genre that has no name. This is
what makes the article so unique and intriguing as it appeals to many, not
necessarily those of Hispanic heritage.
Yes, it would be cool to see how different audiences are creating texts that respond to this news. Obviously, there are a range of responses to seeing Despacito fall to TSwift and any number of different ways to voice pleasure or disdain.
